Hublot has been busy, releasing a series of new watches to kick off the year. While the Classic Fusions and Big Bang Unico get a fresh coat of paint, it's the Big Bang Tourbillon that steals the spotlight with its sapphire and metal caliber, paying homage to Novak Djokovic's special edition. However, the true star is the Big Bang Unico SR_A, a creation by the talented British designer Samuel Ross, who has been collaborating with Hublot since 2022.
I had the pleasure of chatting with Ross in Miami back in 2024, during the launch of his third watch in the series. His tourbillon models, with their unique materials and colors, offered a fresh perspective on Hublot's design language. However, the limited editions' high price tags made them exclusive to a select few collectors. I wondered if Ross would ever bring his design vision to more accessible pieces, and while he was tight-lipped, it was clear something exciting was on the horizon.
Now, the wait is over with the Big Bang Unico SRA. Ross's signature elongated and layered silhouette, seen in his tourbillon series, is reimagined in a more compact 42mm diameter and 14.5mm thickness. The black ceramic Unico features a subtle SRA branding engraved on the midcase, and the honeycomb motif, a hallmark of Ross's design, is carried over to the structured rubber strap.
The skeletonized dial, a signature of the tourbillon models, is retained, offering a glimpse of the in-house HUB1280 caliber. Unlike its predecessors, this watch boasts a more familiar view, devoid of bold sapphire elements or colorful accents. However, the automatic flyback chronograph caliber with its silicon escapement is a perfect match for the unconventional case design, creating a cohesive look that feels more understated compared to the tourbillons.
Priced at $31,200 and limited to just 200 pieces, the Big Bang Unico SR_A is a collector's dream. As someone who has been eagerly awaiting the next chapter of Ross's collaboration with Hublot, I'm thrilled to see this project come to life. The skeletonized Unico movement complements the case design beautifully, resulting in a watch that feels more subtle and refined, despite the bold Big Bang name.
And this is the part most people miss...
While the previous designs embraced vibrant colors, this fourth creation takes a different approach, opting for a more minimalist look. I believe a touch of color would have elevated this watch, especially given the distilled SR_A concept.
